Day 2 PORTO DE GALINHAS (B)

In the last few years the tiny fisherman’s village of Porto de Galinhas has become one of the most important tourist attractions in Brazil. It is located about 60 km south of Recife and it is nestled amid coconut trees along a stunning white sandy beach with crystal-clear waters and an offshore chain of reefs. During low tide the reef forms natural pools where you can swim or snorkel with tropical fish in 28° year-round water. A “jangada”, traditional fishing boat, can be used to get to the reef and its tide pools or to a seahorse conservation area.

    Accommodation: Marambai do Porto (3*)

Day 3 – Day 4 PORTO DE GALINHAS – SAO MIGUEL DOS MILAGRES (B)

From Porto de Galinhas you will continue your self-drive to São Miguel dos Milagres, located halfway along the Coral Coast. Apart from being a tiny fishing village São Miguel is a true piece of paradise and the perfect beach getaway. It is blessed with serene beaches with emerald waters, lined with swinging coconut trees.

Relaxing in a hammock strung between two palm trees on a paradisiacal beach, whilst sipping coconut juice from a freshly fallen coconut and watching the world go by or snorkelling, scuba diving, horse riding or visiting the manatee visitors centre at the Rio Tatuamunha are just a few of the activities available in São Miguel dos Milagres.

    Accommodation: Casa Acayu (4*)

Day 5 SAO MIGUEL DOS MILAGRES – MACEIO (B)

From São Miguel dos Milagres you will continue your self-drive towards Maceió, the capital of Alagoas State. Maceió stands out for its gorgeous coastline with pristine beaches, bordered with coconut trees. Pajuçara, Sete Coqueiros, Ponta Verde and Jatiucá are just a few of its urban beaches. Maceió is also blessed with an offshore reef and its natural pools can be visited by raft during low tide. Fish, shrimp, crab and lobster are some of Maceió’s specialities in the many sidewalk eateries.

    Accommodation: Ponta Verde (3*)

    Day 6 MACEIO – PENEDO (B)

You will continue your self-drive towards Penedo and and on the way you will pass through the hippie and surfer town of Praia do Francês, famous for its laid-back atmosphere, and Praia do Gunga, one of the most beautiful beaches in Brazil due to its location between the Atlantic Ocean and the Lagoa do Roteiro (Roteiro Lake), guaranteeing a unique colour of the surrounding ocean; bluer during low tide and greener during high tide, when river and ocean meet.

You could also pay a short visit to Marechal Deodoro, a quaint colonial town with cobbled streets and well-preserved colonial buildings set on the banks of the Lagoa Manguaba (Manguaba Lake).

Penedo, founded by the Portuguese in 1614 near the mouth of the São Francisco River and under Dutch occupation for eight years, is one of Brazil’s colonial jewels. It is surrounded by culture and history and it displays the beauty of the Portuguese and Dutch colonial architecture that can be seen in churches, convents and mansions. Among its most significant and well preserved buildings are the São Francisco Convent, the Nossa Senhora dos Anjos Church, the Nossa Senhora da Corrente Church and the Nossa Senhora do Rosario dos Pretos Cathedral. The city offers many guided river tours down the “Velho Chico” (“Old Frank”) to where it meets the sea.

    Accommodation: Hotel Sao Francisco

    Day 7 PENEDO – ARACAJU (B)

You will continue your self-drive towards Aracaju. Halfway on the way you will reach one of the highlights or your self-drive tour, the pristine and unspoiled Santa Isabel Nature Reserve. The reserve features vast coconut groves, deep blue lagoons amid lush swamp lands and high fine sand dunes with an ever-present emerald ocean in the background. The road through the reserve is a simple but good gravel road, offering splendid views of the scenery en route.

Aracaju is the capital of the smallest state of Brazil: Sergipe, a sugar-producing region that was strategically important in colonial times. Aracaju’s centre sits on the Sergipe River and it is guarded from the ocean by a sandy barrier island, the Ilha de Santa Luzia, boasting many unspoiled beaches.

Aracaju is famous for its savory crabs and just south of Atalaia Beach you will find the popular “Passarela do Carangueijo” (“Crab Lane”), a row of sidewalk eateries along the waterfront serving the famous respected local dish.

    Accommodation: Mercure Aracaju (3*)

Day 8 ARACAJU – PRAIA DO FORTE (B)

You will continue your self-drive towards Praia do Forte. Accommodation: Porto Zarpa (3*)

Day 9 PRAIA DO FORTE (B)

Located approximately 80 kilometres north of Salvador and in close proximity to the Atlantic Rainforest Area, Praia do Forte is a lovely tourist village. It is renowned for its gorgeous beaches with transparent waters and soft white sand, where sea turtles lay their eggs. The beaches are bordered by lush coconut palm groves and an incredible coral reef which runs along the shore and extends out into the ocean. During low tide many brightly coloured fish are stranded in the small pools that form around the reef and these little tide pools become treasure troves of amazing sea life. Snorkeling and diving are very popular activities. We suggest you visit the headquarters of the sea turtle conservation project, the Tamar Project Station, a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the five different species of sea turtles native to the coastal region of Brazil.

It’s also worth visiting the ruins of the Garcia D’Avila Castle (1552), the only medieval castle in Brazil.

    Accommodation: Porto Zarpa (3*)

Day 10 PRAIA DO FORTE – SALVADOR (B)

You will continue your self-drive towards Salvador where you will return your hire car at the “Localiza” at Salvador’s international airport. In case you decide to spend some time in Salvador, Latino Holidays is able to offer you extension programs in the area.

  • More information on Brazil:

Brazil – with the country’s name, one associates endless Amazon jungle, wonderful beaches, Rio de Janeiro, carnival and samba. This is all correct but in reality: Brazil is much more than a country of the superlatives!

Brazil, a country of immense proportions and contrasts, is a mysterious attraction for many people – The country, alone, is almost the size of Europe and covers half of the South American continent. The climate changes from the permanent warm, tropic north over all sub tropic variants to the moderate south. Since the 16th century – when the Portuguese began to settle in the country – Brazil has always had a magic attraction to foreigners. First there was the gold and then rubber and coffee, and today it is above all the rhythm and the exotic that attracts tourists. The Brazilian people show a lot of happiness, kindness and spontaneity. The largest country in South America is a mirror of fascinating pictures.

    More information on your route:

Recife, Porto de Galinhas, São Miguel dos Milagres, Maceió, Penedo, Aracaju, Praia do Forte, Salvador. Our Recife to Salvador coastal self-drive offers you an excellent and more independent way of discovering Brazil’s magical north-eastern coastline, whilst being provided with a carefully compiled information kit that has been especially designed to guide you to some of Brazil’s most beautiful spots.

The kit is self-contained, complete with maps, tips, descriptions of towns and thorough route instructions to attractions along the way: snorkelling sites, a boat tour to the mouth of the São Francisco river and a sea turtle conservation project to name a few.

The advantage of a self-drive is that you will be largely in control. You decide the pace and where or how long you stop at a particular destination. The self-drive is customized to the number of days you have available and the vehicle as well as overnight stays at hotels along the way are booked by us accordingly. Comprising many kilometres of untouched beaches, coconut groves, rivers, lagoons and colourful reefs, this self-drive is a must for anyone intending to make the most of their stay in north eastern Brazil.

Green list: Self-drives are packages where clients stop at several cities or sites using a rental car (therefore avoiding the use of a plane).
