Northern Patagonia Overland

  • Day 1 PUERTO MONTT – HORNOPIREN

    Reception at the airport in Puerto Montt Tepual and start the journey to the south on route 7, known as Austral Road. The part of the road from Puerto Montt to Hornopien combines inland transport involving a ferry crossing in regular service.

    Day 2 HORNOPIREN – CALETA GONZALO – LAKE YELCHO (B – D)

    Breakfast at hotel. We will need to report at the Hornopiren pier by 09.30 am to board a boat to Caleta Gonzalo through the Largo fjord. Departure is scheduled at 15.30 pm. After arriving to Caleta Gonzalo, the journey south continues for roughly 100 km down the Carretera Austral road to Lake Yelcho. But before that, passengers hike a trail known as Los Alerces for an opportunity to admire pristine, millenary forests. Dinner and accommodation.

    Day 3 LAGO YELCHO – LA JUNTA (B – L – D)

    Breakfast at hotel. Morning hike through lodge area to take in its natural surroundings. Lunch at Lodge. Afternoon trip on the Carretera Austral road to the town of La Junta. (Roughly 100 Km or 1h15m). The trip includes highlights such as the Village of Santa Lucia and the Palena river. Arrival to hotel, dinner and accommodation.

    Day 4 PALENA RIVER – EL SAUCE (B – LB – D)

    Breakfast at hotel. You will need to travel 1 km from La Junta to the Rosselot River. After a short safety briefing, the adventure begins. After rafting for about 1 km it’s possible to see the confluence with the Palena River, one of the three most important tributaries of the Aysen region. The tour offers vistas to beautiful Patagonian landscapes filled with natural and wildlife highlights accompanied by the songs of countless birds. After rafting approximately 3 hours, you will arrive to the beach where we will board a vehicle that will take us east to Puerto Raul Marin Balmaceda. Arrival to the El Sauce hot springs after a 7 km trip. Lunch box will be served and then it’s time for an invigorating swim in 100% natural thermal waters. Return to La Junta. Dinner and accommodation.

    Day 5 LA JUNTA – COYAIQUE (B – L)

    Breakfast at hotel. The trip south on the Carretera Austral road continues for 44 km, to the village of Puyuhuapi and later Queulat National Park. You will experience the splendour of the Quelat hanging glacier and hike through the woods of the reserve, where lunch is served. The journey then continues for 222 km, (approximately a 4 hour journey), southbound on the Carretera Austral to the regional capital, Coyhaique. Arrival to Coyhaique. Accommodation.

    Day 6 COYAIQUE (B – L)

    Breakfast at hotel. Transfer to Bonanza, on the slope of Los Franciscanos hill, for a low-difficulty-level horseback ride. The horses are tame and accustomed to people, and all the necessary equipment (helmets, chaps and ponchos) will be handed out. You will ride through native forest, streams and trails to a lookout offering full panoramic view of the Coyhaique Valley. After a barbecue and some rest, it’s time to return to the hotel in Bonanza. Accommodation.

    Day 7 COYAIQUE – BALMACEDA – SANTIAGO (B)

    Breakfast at hotel. Transfer to the Balmaceda airport (55 km) to fly back to Santiago (flight not included).
