Regular transfer without guide from hotel in Sao Luis to Barreirinhas (Lencois Maranhenses). In the afternoon, visit Lencois Maranhenses’ lakes and sand dunes by 4×4 (regular service, without guide). There is nothing in the world quite like it. A desert of white sand dunes with very little vegetation, crystal-clear fresh water lagoons and largely unstudied wildlife, extending for an area of 155 thousand hectares, making it the largest national park in northeastern Brazil. In spite of the fact that it has the dimensions of the city of Sao Paulo, it is only inhabited by 100 families. The Lencois Maranhenses in the state of Maranhao is considered to be one of the 7 wonders of nature, but to discover it, one needs a sense of adventure. Accommodation at selected hotel.

    Day 2 LENCOIS MARANHENSES (B)

Early in the morning, depart on a regular boat trip down the Preguiças river that skirts the desert until it meets the sea, visiting the fishermen’s settlements of Vassouras, Mandacaru and Caburé. Return to Barreirinhas. Accommodation at selected hotel.

Day 3 LENCOIS MARANHENSES – SAO LUIS (B)

Breakfast will be served in your accommodation. Morning at leisure. Regular transfers without guide to Sao Luis. Extension programs can be arranged by Latino Holidays.

  • More information on Brazil:

Brazil – with the country’s name, one associates endless Amazon jungle, wonderful beaches, Rio de Janeiro, carnival and samba. This is all correct but in reality: Brazil is much more than a country of the superlatives!

Brazil, a country of immense proportions and contrasts, is a mysterious attraction for many people – The country, alone, is almost the size of Europe and covers half of the South American continent. The climate changes from the permanent warm, tropic north over all sub tropic variants to the moderate south. Since the 16th century – when the Portuguese began to settle in the country – Brazil has always had a magic attraction for foreigners. First there was the gold and then rubber and coffee, and today it is above all the rhythm and the exotic that attracts tourists. The Brazilian people show a lot of happiness, kindness and spontaneity. The largest country in South America is a mirror of fascinating pictures.

More information about the Lencois Maranhenses:

The Lencois Maranhenses National Park is located in Brazil, in the State of Maranhao. The place is one of the most marvelous and unique places in the world. A region of white silky sands intercepted at regular intervals by endless cool oases of turquoise lakes.

Lying just outside the Amazon basin, the region is subject to a regular rain season. The rain water accumulates in the valleys in between sand dunes and forms clear blue and green lagoons that reach their fullest between July and September. The area is also surprisingly home to an enormous biodiversity. Mangroves, deserted beaches, buritis and the Preguiças River help compose the park’s diversity.

The best time to visit the park is from May to September, when it’s sunny and the lagoons are still full.

    More information on visa requirements:

Australians are required to pre-arrange a visa. Visa normally will give you the right to spend 90 days in the country.
