Altiplanic Desert Trail

  • Day 1 BUENOS AIRES (D)

    Arrival and reception at the airport. Transfer to the hotel. Accommodation. Afterwards city tour visiting the most interesting places in Buenos Aires. At night, transfer to El Querandi for a dinner and show where you will enjoy the magnetism of tango.

    Day 2 BUENOS AIRES – SALTA (B)

    Transfer to the airport to board the scheduled flight to Salta (flight is not included). Arrival and reception. In the afternoon, enjoy a visit to the beautiful city of Salta including a must see:

    The MAAM (Archaeological Museum of High Mountain). This museum holds the Llullaillaco Volcano mummies – a great archaeological asset.

    Day 3 SALTA – CACHI – CAFAYATE (B)

    Departure from Salta to the Calchaquiers Valleys visiting Cachi, Route 40, De Las Flecha’s Gorge (Arrow’s ravine) to finally arrive at Cafayate. Accommodation.

    Day 4 CAFAYATE – SALTA (B)

    In the morning we will take a brief tour of the town including a visit to a winery. After lunch (not included) depart towards Salta visiting Quebrada de Cafayate (Cafayate Gorge). Arrive at Salta and transfer to the hotel.

    Day 5 SALTA – SAN ANTONIO DE LOS COBRES (B)

    Early departure following the route of the Train to the Clouds railway. Travelling this route we will see this impressive engineering masterpiece with its viaducts, switchbacks and loops. We finally arrive at the small village of San Antonio de los Cobres. After lunch we will continue towards Polvorrilla Viaduct, one of the most impressive engineering masterpieces. Return to San Antonio de los Cobres. Accommodation.

    Note: The passengers will be able to go to San Antonio de los Cobres and Viaduct on the Train to the Clouds, if preferable, at an additional cost. Valid option from April to early-December, subject to weather conditions.

    Day 6 SAN ANTONIO DE LOS COBRES – SAN PEDRO DE ATACAMA (B)

    Early departure towards Salinas Grandes, the third largest salt plains in the world. Later we will arrive at Susques, have lunch and visit the village with its enchanting church. We continue to Paso de Jama to reach Atacama. Accommodation.

    Day 7 SAN PEDRO DE ATACAMA (B)

    Departure towards Atacama Salt Lake. It is located in the centre of the most barren desert in the world. We will have the opportunity to admire the great variety of flamingos and migratory birds that have found in the enormous salt flats their natural habitat, these birds give a very peculiar atmosphere to the region.

    Day 8 SAN PEDRO DE ATACAMA (B)

    Early departure to the El Tatio Geysers. This is a geothermal field located in the Andes Mountains which presents at the early hours of the morning an impressive steaming fumaroles activity produced by high temperature from its craters. Return to San Pedro and in the afternoon visit the Valley of the Moon. It is an interesting area with formations of stone and sand which was declared a Sanctuary of Nature. During the excursion you will climb a giant dune to observe the sunset, one of the main attractions in San Pedro de Atacama.

    Day 9 SAN PEDRO DE ATACAMA – HITO CAJON – VILLA MAR (B – L – D)

    Depart San Pedro de Atacama and journey to the border of Bolivia, Hito Cajon. We continue to Malku Cave visiting Laguna Verde, Valley of Dali, the Geysers Sol de Manana (Morning Sun) and Laguna Colorada where you can watch flamingos. Arrival and overnight.

    Day 10 VILLA MAR – COLCHANI (B – D)

    Depart to the town of Colchani to visit the Great Salt. Visit to Incahuasi’s Island, known as Isla Pescado (Fish Island) where you can see the giant cactus. Lunch. In the afternoon you will arrive at Colchani. Accommodation.

    Note: according the rules of Bolivia Government during the rainy season (Nov – Mar), it is not possible to cross the Salt Lake so the itinerary during this day will be modified and the Isla Pescado will not be visited.

    Day 11 COLCHANI – TUPIZA (B – L – D)

    Departure to Tupiza. Overnight at Tupiza.

    Day 12 TUPIZA – LA QUIACA (B)

    In the morning, transfer to the border with Bolivia. Arrival at Villazon and after customs formalities, continue to La Quiaca. After an endless series of switchbacks and always ascending, we reach the highest point during the trip, “Abra del Condor” at 4000 m. The view before arriving at the village is impressive and which is why it is called the “hanging village in the mountain”.

    Day 13 IRUYA – HUMAUCA GORGE – TILCARA (B)

    Morning at leisure and departure towards Humahuaca. After visiting the town we will continue towards the Humahuaca Horhe, visiting typical and colorful villages. Arrive at Tilcara.

    Day 14 TILCARA – PURMAMARCA – BUENOS AIRES (B)

    In the morning, we will visit the village of Tilcara and its Pucara. Then, we will go to Purnamarca where we will have lunch (not included) and have time to visit the handcraft fair. We return to Salta in the afternoon to board the flight to Buenos Aires (not included) . Arrival and transfer to the selected hotel.

    Day 15 BUENOS AIRES (B)

    Time at leisure. In due time transfer to the airport to continue your journey to your next destination.
